India Attack on Pakistan: What Sparked the 2025 Cross-Border Strikes
As of May 10, 2025, tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated significantly following a series of military engagements and retaliatory actions. The situation remains volatile, with both nations exchanging airstrikes, drone attacks, and artillery fire, leading to significant casualties and international concern.

Operation Sindoor: India's Preemptive Strikes

On May 7, India launched "Operation Sindoor," targeting what it described as terrorist infrastructure within Pakistan. The operation involved missile strikes by Indian Air Force jets, including Rafale fighters equipped with SCALP cruise missiles and Hammer bombs. Reported targets included Bahawalpur, Muridke, Gulpur, Bhimber, Chak Amru, Bagh, Kotli, Sialkot, and Muzaffarabad. India's Defense Minister Rajnath Singh stated that at least 100 militants were killed in these strikes.

Pakistan's Retaliation and Escalation

In response, Pakistan condemned the attacks as "cowardly" and vowed retaliation. Subsequently, Pakistan conducted heavy mortar and artillery shelling on Poonch, targeting civilian areas and infrastructure, resulting in at least 15 civilian deaths and 43 injuries. Pakistan also claimed to have shot down multiple Indian drones and fighter jets over its airspace.

Civilian Impact and Humanitarian Concerns

The ongoing conflict has had a severe impact on civilians in both countries. In Indian-administered Kashmir, at least 18 civilians have been killed, while 17 have died in Pakistan-administered Kashmir. Mass evacuations, school closures, and the suspension of flights and major sporting events have been reported.

International Response and Mediation Efforts

The international community has expressed deep concern over the escalating conflict. While the United States has urged both sides to avoid further escalation, Gulf States, particularly Saudi Arabia, have emerged as crucial mediators due to their substantial economic ties with both nations. Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir's visit to India highlights this shift in diplomatic efforts.

Information Warfare and Censorship

Amid the conflict, the Indian government has ordered social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to block over 8,000 accounts within the country, including those of Pakistani politicians, media outlets, and celebrities. This move is part of a broader digital crackdown amid escalating tensions, raising concerns over censorship and the spread of misinformation.

Conclusion

The current India-Pakistan conflict represents a significant escalation with the potential for further deterioration. Both nations possess nuclear capabilities, and the risk of miscalculation or unintended escalation is high. International mediation, particularly by Gulf States, appears critical to averting an imminent war. The situation underscores the enduring volatility rooted in the Kashmir dispute since the 1947 partition of British India.
